Facebook is bringing back the poke – a way of interacting with friends that many users haven’t seen in a while, even though it never really went away.

Tech expert Omar Gallaga, who wrote about the return of the poke for CNET, says it’s all part of an attempt to bring Gen Z back to the platform.

Highlights from this segment:

– The Facebook poke dates back to 2004, when the social network was founded. It allows users to “nudge” a friend, without having to communicate beyond that gesture.

– Though it’s been possible to poke all along, Facebook plans to make the feature more prominent and to gamify it for younger users.

– A poke is similar to a badge on TikTok or WhatsApp that tells everyone who your friends are and how frequently you receive feedback from them.
