Gov. Greg Abbott has named John Scott interim Texas Attorney General following the impeachment of suspended Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Scott, a familiar name in Texas politics, previously served as the interim Secretary of State until December and previously worked in the attorney general’s office under Gov. Abbott.
Texas Tribune political reporter James Barragán described Scott as a “a bit of controversial pick” due to his past actions – namely defending President Donald Trump in his unsuccessful challenge of the 2020 presidential election results.
“Nonetheless, the governor has gone to him again, tapped him to run the agency in the interim while this whole impeachment trial plays out,” Barragán says.
