Houston Will Likely Be Little Affected By New China Tariffs

Scrap aluminum, steel pipe and ethanol make up for the largest affected exports to China.

China has slapped tariffs on 128 American products in retaliation for a similar move by the Trump administration.

Among them are ethanol, scrap aluminum and steel pipe.

The value of those combined commodities amounts to about $400,000 worth of exports to China every year, Patrick Jankowski, regional economist with the Greater Houston Partnership, said.

“That sounds like a lot, but we export $7.7 billion worth of goods to China,” he said. “You do the math, it’s around five percent of our exports to China that are going to be impacted by these tariffs.”
