Las Vegas police say at least 58 people are dead and more than 400 wounded after a shooting in which a man believed to be a lone gunmen fired on attendees at an outdoor concert, from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel, Sunday night.
In an era when mass shootings make the news with regularity, the sound recordings from this incident are unusual in at least one way – the gunfire sounds as though it came from one or more fully automatic weapons, not a rifle or semi-automatic.
Police say the gunman shot himself before police arrived. He was identified as a 64-year-old Nevada resident named Stephen Paddock, who has reportedly also lived in Texas.
Casey Morell, a producer on the news team at Nevada Public Radio in Las Vegas says police are being careful in releasing information about the shooter. Authorities have confirmed that Paddock was a resident of Mesquite, Nevada, 90 miles from Las Vegas.
Morell says the shooting is likely to bring more security to the tourist mecca of Las Vegas. More police, both in uniform and in plain clothes, along with metal detectors are among the possibilities.
