Older San Antonio Veterans Live At Home Longer With Help From VA Program

The VA invested $2 million in training for volunteers who work with senior veterans remain independent.

The VA pilot program places federally-backed volunteers in the homes of veterans to help with cooking, cleaning and other low-skill tasks.

A 92-year-old World War II veteran, Gerald Bennett, lives by himself in a San Antonio apartment community made up of seniors. His unit is small but homey. Newspapers cover the coffee table, and family photos take most of the shelf space in the living room.

“I like the independence of having my own place and doing my own thing,” Bennett says.
