Supreme Court rejects Texas’ challenge to federal deportation policy

The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday rejected a lawsuit by Texas and Louisiana that attempted to challenge the Biden administration’s deportation policies. Texas v. Biden arose in response to a federal memo instructing immigration agents to prioritize the deportation of convicted felons and public safety risks. We’ll speak with Denise Gilman, director of the Immigration Clinic at the University of Texas Law School.

Abortion clinics in neighboring states see more Texans than locals

On June 24, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court released its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, overturning Roe. v Wade and the federal right to abortion. The ruling stripped nearly all remaining abortion access in Texas and other states. Now, nearly a year later, KUT’s Olivia Aldridge takes stock of where Texans have turned to seek abortion care.

Extreme heat in Texas and on the other side of the border is making the always-dangerous trek made by thousands of undocumented migrants even more treacherous. When migrants die before reaching their destination, local law enforcement and communities often become responsible for their bodies – but those that lack the resources to store them can instead send the bodies to Operation Identification at Texas State University’s Forensic Anthropology Center. We’ll hear from Dr. Kate Spradley, whose small team works to identify and repatriate the remains found along the border.
