Typewriter Rodeo: A walk in my neighborhood

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

A walk in my neighborhood (for Elizabeth Hyslop)

I used to do it every day

Back in covid times

So why not?

The work can wait

Huh

I never knew

Bill had a whole patch

of sunflowers

And that cactus at the side

Of the house two blocks down

Is photoworthy

And the trees all look

The same

But of course they aren’t

The subtle shifts in bark

Twists of branch

And long-gone leaves

And maybe that

Is how I look now, too

The same, yes,

But also a little rougher

At the edges

But still growing

Still exploring

Still stretching out my limbs

To discover

More.
