Typewriter Rodeo: First Christmas

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

First Christmas

lights adorn the roof

there sits a tree in our living room

an ornament is placed that means

the most to us

snuggle it tight

it’s baby’s first Christmas

tinsel and candy canes, cups of hot chocolate

visiting Santa to ask what he’ll bring us

grandma and grandpa arrive from far away

bringing colorful boxes

I sure hope they stay

it’s a merry time

everyone is singing songs

someday soon, I’ll learn the words

and sing along

there are red and white stockings

hung by the fire

candies and cookies

mommy says, lookie what I got you

outside it’s chilly

unusual for Texas weather

I just feel happy because we’re

all here together

mesmerized by crinkling paper

and the twinkling of warm lights

I’ll just chew on my first

for the rest of the night

and as I drift off to sleep

cradled in daddy’s arms

I imagine all this love

is holiday’s true charm
