Ode to Candidate Drop-Outs
well, they gave it their all
the sweat
the tears
the smiles stretched so thin
their teeth became caricatures

O, presidential candidates
we will miss you when you’re gone
we will wave a hearty good bye
as you drop out of the race
elbows on your knees
back heaving
as you catch your breath
and we will say

Thanks for making us laugh!
Thanks for the terrified dreams
you caused
when the polls hinted you were successful
O, presidential candidates
your ups and downs
were fun to watch
but seriously
thanks for going now
thanks for having some (?) class
and please
as you exit the stage
don’t let the two-party system door
hit you on the . . .
