Typewriter Rodeo: Ode to Candidate Drop-Outs

Every election year, there are candidates who decide to leave the race before it’s over. That was the inspiration for Typewriter Rodeo’s Kari Anne Roy as she wrote this week’s poem.

Ode to Candidate Drop-Outs 

well, they gave it their all

  the sweat

the tears

the smiles stretched so thin

their teeth became caricatures

of teeth

O, presidential candidates

  we will miss you when you’re gone

we will wave a hearty good bye

as you drop out of the race

  elbows on your knees

back heaving

  as you catch your breath

and we will say

Thanks for being crazy!

Thanks for making us laugh!

Thanks for the terrified dreams

you caused

when the polls hinted you were successful

O, presidential candidates

your ups and downs

were fun to watch

but seriously

thanks for going now

thanks for having some (?) class

and please

as you exit the stage

don’t let the two-party system door

hit you on the . . .
