Typewriter Rodeo: Refrigerator

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

Refrigerator (for Kristie)

Here we are
the two of us
You, paused, wondering
What’s on the other side
Me, solid, sure,
Knowing
For that is the power
Of coolness
That is the allure
Of a tight seal
Mysterious as a secret
And perhaps there is still
That leftover lasagna
You are certain
The milk is still good
(Aren’t you?)
And there are veggies and cold water
And that half-open box of baking soda
That has seen
Better days
Yes it is all here
Behind this door!
Or is it?
Yes here we are
The two of us
Three a.m.
Standing face to face
Again.
