Typewriter Rodeo: Homeschooling

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

All kinds of kids make a world. Some are studious, some fidgety. They’re all at home right now, trying to learn.

Homeschooling

this poem is for every kid

drowned by all the bubbles

on all the tests

for the kids who work fast…

and wait.

for the ones who work better

on the move

spinning circles

around those inexplicable

stationary desks

this poem is for everyone who

learns

by experience

by dirt and sweat

who needs a moment

of quiet

away

from the rest

this is for everyone

who knows

deep in their heart

that homeschooling,

distances learning,

whatever you call it

is just as important

maybe more

as taking a breath,

sleeping past nine

and digging a big hole

in the yard
