Bigger is better: that’s a common refrain in Texas. Smartphones have also been moving in that direction. The top brands have all released models with more screen space, longer-lasting batteries and greater speed. And all that bigness comes with a bigger price tag, too.

And that has some consumers thinking about a return to simpler times – to a device that just works and doesn’t strain your wallet or stain your credit report.  

Digital savant Omar Gallaga of the Austin American-Statesman’s 512 Tech says there are options for those who are tired of too much smartphone.
